Re: BioSol-SDS/Synthetic Degreasing Solvent
I was finally able to review the information that you sent me on June 21, 1996 regarding your request to formulate an opinion on BioSol-SDS as it relates to transportation and disposal requirements pertaining to Alberta's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Waste Control Legislation.

Based on the MSDS for the material that you provided, specifically the product physical and toxic properties, it is my opinion that this product does not meet the hazardous waste criteria as defined in the legislation mentioned above and, as such, it is not considered hazardous waste.

Furthermore, and assuming that no recycling capability is available, the liquid effluent resulting from the use of this cleaning agent is potentially biodegradable and suitable for discharge to the local wastewater treatment plant. However, in case this option is considered, the conditions under which the product was used should also be assessed to ensure that possible additional contaminants present in the spent solvent do not preclude treatment or disposal at the treatment plant. When discharge at municipally owned wastewater treatment plants is considered prior permission should be obtained from the operator to ensure compliance with local sewer by-laws.
